General Election Results - 6 April 1987

General elections were held on 6 April 1987 on the normal expiry of the Parliament's term for all of the members of the 17-seat parliament.

A total of 46 candidates contested the election.  The ruling United Workers Party (UWP) led by John Compton, and the St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) led by Julian Hunte each presented 17 candidates.  The George Odlum led Progressive Labour Party (PLP) presented 12 candidates.

The close polling results did not provide either one of the main contending parties with a clear mandate.  The United Workers Party won 9 of the 17 seats with four Cabinet ministers lost their parliamentary seats.  The remaining eight seats went to the rejuvenated St. Lucia Labour Party led by Julian Hunte. Voter turnout was 60.8%

The legislature was therefore dissolved on 14 April and new elections took place on 30 April.  As the UWP had only won a single seat majority, Prime Minister John Compton called early elections, which were held on 30 April in order to try to increase the party's majority. However, although their share of the vote rose to 53.2%, the SLP retained their eight seats.
