General Election
Results - 25 April 1969 |
General elections were held in Saint Lucia on 25 April 1969 for the 10-seat parliament. This was the first general election since St. Lucia became a British associated state in 1967. As an Associated State, the Legislative Council was replaced by a House of Assembly, the Administrator was designated Governor, and the Chief Minister became Premier.
A total of 21 candidates contested the election. The Kenneth Foster led St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) presented nine candidates, while the United Workers Party (UWP) led by John Compton presented 10 candidates. There were two candidates presented by the breakaway SLP-United Front led by George F.L. Charles.
The result was a victory for the ruling United Workers Party, which won six of the 10 seats, cutting its majority by two. The Saint Lucia Labour Party won three seats and the United Front Party won one seat. Voter turnout was 53.2%.
