Guyana Electoral Legislation |
|
The Constitution of Guyana provides for elections to be held and subject to the Constitution, Parliament may make additional provision for the general conduct of the elections. Whereas the Constitution embodies the provisions for the qualifications as electors and the like, other provisions deemed necessary for Electoral Reform were initiated by the Constitutional Reform Commission and ratified by Parliament.
The Representation of the People Act, Cap. 1:03 (with amendments to 13th August, 2006) is the Principal Act that makes provision for the election of members of the National Assembly under a system of proportional representation and for purposes connected therewith. The Local democratic Organs Act No. 12 of 1980 makes provision for the institution of a country wide system of local government through the establishment of Organs of Local Democratic Power. The election of members of the Regional Democratic Councils is provided for in this Act. |
