John Gilbert Thompson

John Gilbert Thompson was a politician and former parliamentarian in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Early life
John Gilbert Thompson was born in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 1930.
Career
Thompson’s political career began in 1972 when he unsuccessfully contested the North Leeward seat for the St. Vincent Labour Party (SVLP) against Alphonso Dennie of the People’s Political Party (PPP). He would return in 1974 to take the seat from Dennie.
He represented North Leeward in the House of Assembly for the St. Vincent Labour Party (SVLP) on two occasions - 1974 to 1979 and 1984 to 1989. He also served as a Minister Without Portfolio and as Deputy Speaker in the House of Parliament.
Outside of politics, Thompson was a headteacher before leaving for work and study in England. He later served as a real estate agent.
Personal life
His son, Dr. Jerrol Thompson, a physician was Member of Parliament for North Leeward and Minister of Science and Technology from 2001 to 2010.
Death
Thompson died on 20 February 2018, aged 87. He was accorded an Official Funeral on 17 March 2018 at the Methodist Church in Kingstown, St. Vincent, followed by internment at the Fitz Hughes Cemetery.
