Marjorie Taylor was a Jamaican politician, former Member of Parliament, and Former Junior Cabinet Minister.

Career
A stalwart of the People's National Party (PNP), Taylor served for several years as Special Assistant to former Prime Minister Michael Manley (1979 – 1986) and Councillor for the Norman Gardens Division of the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC), as it was known then.

She served as Parliamentary Secretary of Local Government from 1986 to 1991. On Manley’s retirement from politics in 1992, Taylor succeeded him as Member of Parliament for East Kingston and Port Royal in a by-election in May 1992; and went on to defeat Danny Ffrench of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in the 1993 general election.  She did not contest any subsequent elections.

Taylor served in several cabinet-level positions.  She served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Labour, Welfare, and Sports (1991-1995); Minister of State in the Ministry of Local Government, Youth and Sports (1995-1997); and Minister of State in the Ministry of Health (1997 – 1999).  She was a Senator and former President of the PNP Women's Movement.

After her retirement, she was appointed Jamaica's first Ambassador for Children in 1998, and brought Jamaica's name into the international debate on child abuse and children's rights advocacy. Her pioneering work helped to establish the Office of the Children's Advocate. 

Death

Taylor died on 14 October 2017 after an extended period of illness.
