Lincoln Myers was a former politician and Cabinet Minister in Trinidad and Tobago.

Early life and education

Lincoln Myers attended the University of Miami where he attained a Bachelor’s degree in History (1972) and a Master of Arts (MA) in Economic Development and Latin American History (1976).

Career

Lincoln Myers was a former Minister of Food Production, Marine Exploitation, Forestry and the Environment in the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR) Government under late Prime Minister A.N.R. Robinson.

Myers, an outspoken political and social commentator up until his death, is known for being part of the political movement that crushed the People's National Movement in the elections of 1986, defeating them 33-3. 

Before that historic win, Myers famously fasted from 6 am to 6 pm on the steps of the Hall of Justice for 40 days in 1985 over corruption allegations against the PNM.  Myers deepened his political mark and the NAR’s by also defeating then Prime Minister George Chambers in Chambers’ St Ann’s East constituency in that historic election.  He was the Member of Parliament for St Ann's East from 1986 to 1991.

In 2014, Lincoln, a film chronicling that action was screened at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival.

Personal life

He was married to Joy Persad-Myers, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture.

Death

Lincoln Myers died on 15 March 2016 after ailing for some time.  He was in his mid 60s.  He had been wheelchair-bound for the last 24 years following spinal issues and surgery.  He was buried on 19 March 2016 after a funeral service at St Catherine’s RC Church, Gran Couva.
