Velon Leo John, OBE
Former Leader of the Opposition and Cabinet Minister, Saint Lucia

Dr. Velon Leo John is a Saint Lucian politician, former Leader of the Opposition.

Career

John, a lawyer, successfully contested the Laborie seat for the St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) in the 1992 general election. In February 1996, he was appointed Leader of the Opposition and served until May 1997.

John was re-elected in 1997 and was appointed Home Affairs, Legal Affairs and Labour. He won a third term in 2001and served as the Minister for Labour Relations, Public Service and Co-operatives in the SLP Administration of Prime Minister Kenny Anthony.

He did not seek re-election in 2006.

He later served as a Magistrate in St. Lucia and the British Virgin Islands.

Honours and awards

John was awarded with the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE).
