Albert "Belto" Emanuel Hughes
Former Government Minister, Anguilla

Albert (Belto) Emanuel Hughes was an Anguillan boat builder, boat-racing captain, building contractor and a longstanding people’s Government Minister and Parliamentary Secretary.

Early life

Albert (Belto) Emanuel Hughes was born in Anguilla in 1934.

Career

Hughes sat in the House as the Elected Representative of District 7 (West End/Long Bay Constituency) for 27 years, firstly in his capacity as Minister of Infrastructure and later as Parliamentary Secretary, working with two separate Governments: that of former Chief Ministers, Hubert Hughes and Osbourne Fleming.

Personal life

Outside of politics, Hughes ' name has become synonymous with Anguilla’s national sport of boat-racing.  Probably from the age of 12 Hughes was involved in boat-racing and especially in Light & Peace (formerly owned by his late father, Kedro Hughes).

Death

Hughes died at his home in West End, Anguilla on 21 December 2016, aged 82.  He was accorded the full honours of a National Funeral on Thursday, 5 January 2016 at the Bethel Methodist Church, Anguilla.  His body was interred at the Immanuel Methodist Church-yard Cemetery at West End.
