Dr. Patricia Michaëlle Amédée Gédéon
Former Cabinet Minister, Haiti

Michaëlle Amédée Gédéon was a Haitian politician and former Cabient Minister.

Early life and education

After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine in Port-au-Prince, Haiti (1969 - 1975), Gédéon trained in Nutrition at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned a Master's degree at Harvard University (Harvard School of Public Health, 1982 - 1983).

Career

A doctor, consultant in Public Health and Nutrition, advisor for non-governmental organizations, Dr. Gédéon is credited with a brilliant career in public administration and in the private and non-governmental sectors.

She served as Minister of Public Health and Population from 24 March 1999 to 2 March 2001 in the the René Préval administration - the first woman to hold the post. She later served as President of the Haitian Red Cross from 2001 to 2013 - the second woman to hold this position after Marie-José Innocent.

She was later the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences from April 2014 to June 2017.

Prior to becomming a Cabinet Minister, Dr. Gédéon was Director General of the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP, September 1997 to March 1999); Consultant at USAID (April 1986 to September 1997); and Director of the Nutrition Section of the Ministry of Planning (September 1983 to April 1986).

Honours and awards

In 2015, she was raised to the grade of "Doctor Honoris Causa" by the Royal University of Haiti. 

Death

Gédéon died Wednesday, 22 August 2018 at Bernard Mevs Hospital , following a violent traffic accident on Tuesday on the #2 National Road returning from Pestel.
