Bermuda General Election Results - 9 February 1989

General elections were held in Bermuda on 9 February 1989 for all 40 seats in the House of Assembly using a first-past-the-post system. Each constituency returned two members to the House of Assembly.

Political Parties & Candidates

A total of 90 candidates from three parties contested the election, with the United Bermuda Party (UBP) presenting 39 candidates; the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) presenting 30 candidates; and the National Liberal Party (NLP) presenting 15 candidates. There was also one independent candidate.

Results

The result was a victory for Premier John Swan and his governing United Bermuda Party (UBP) winning their third general election in six years on Thursday but losing ground to the opposition party. Having gone into the election with 31 of the 40 seats in the House of Assembly, the UBP emerged with 23 seats. Almost all the lost seats went to the Progressive Labour Party (PLP), led by Frederick Wade - now with 15 seats. The National Liberal Party (NLP) won one seat; and the lone independent candidate was successful in the election.
