General elections were held in Bermuda on 18 May 1976 for all 36 seats in the House of Assembly using a first-past-the-post system. Each constituency returned two members to the House of Assembly.
Political Parties & Candidates
A total of 76 candidates from two parties contested the election, with the United Bermuda Party (UBP) presenting a 39 candidates and the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) presenting 36 candidates. There was also one independent candidate.
Results
The result was a victory for the United Bermuda Party (UBP), led by John Sharpe, which won 25 of the 40 seats in the House of Assembly. The Progressive Labour Party (PLP), led by Lois Browne-Evans, won the 11 remaining seats. |
