General elections were held in Turks and Caicos Islands on 29 September 1976.
There were 11 seats in 11 constituencies throughout the islands.
In 1973, the Junkanoo Club, a youth organization was founded by the late James A.G.S. McCartney. Early in 1976 the Junkanoo Club, formed the Turks & Caicos second political party, the People’s Democratic Movement (P.D.M.) under the leadership of the late James A.G.S. McCartney to contest the general election late in the year.
Prior to the 1976 General Election, the members of the State Council, led by the Hon. N.B. Saunders, caucus, the Progressive National Organization (PNO) to challenge the PDM.
Two parties contested the election – Progressive National Organisation (PNO) and the People's Democratic Movement (PDM).
A total of 22 Candidates were nominated to contest the 11 seats. These included: 11 from the PNO, 8 from the PDM, and 3 Independent Candidates
The result was a victory for the PDM winning 5 of 9 seats. The PNO won 4 seats, and two seats went to independent candidates. The two independent candidates joined with the PDM to form the government.
The PDM formed the first Ministerial Government of the Turks & Caicos Islands on 5 October 1976. PDM leader JAGS MCartney became the territory's first Chief Minister.
Voter turnout was 81.34%. |
