Hon. Daniel E. Cummings, MP
Opposition Member of Parliament of St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Daniel Cummings is a politician from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and is currently an opposition member in the House of Assembly.
Early life and education
Daniel E. Cummings was born on 22 April 1952. He holds a General Technical Diploma from the University of Guyana and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of the West Indies (1977-1980). He journeyed thereafter to Yugoslavia where he obtained a Certificate in Water Resources Management at Yaroslav Cerni (1983). Daniel went on to attain a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering and Environmental Science from the University of Oklahoma USA (1986). In 1994, he attended the UWI Cave Hill campus where he qualified for a Masters of Business Administration.
Career
Daniel has worked predominantly in the field of water resources engineering and waste management. His first assignment was as an Engineer for the Water and Sewerage Authority of Trinidad and Tobago and after one and one half years, he joined the Central Water and Sewerage Authority of St. Vincent as a water engineer.
Under his leadership, the CWSA took responsibility for solid waste management, introducing sanitary landfills and collection island wide.
In 1987, he was elevated to General Manager of CWSA. He transformed the organization making it financially self-sustainable. He also introduced irrigation systems using gravity fed systems – providing irrigation for over 1,200 acres of farmland with some 800 more acres to benefit in the same way.
In politics, he served as an Opposition Senator from 2005 to 2010. He was elected a Member of Parliament for the West Kingstown constituency in December 2010. He retained his seat in the 2015 general election.
Personal life
Cummings is married to Sharon an Attorney at Law, has one son and a beautiful stepdaughter.
In addition to his career achievements, Daniel has professional affiliations with a number of noteworthy organizations including the SVG Association of Professional Engineers and the Caribbean Water and Waste Water Association (CWWA). He is a Past President of the Rotary Club of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and has been the recipient of the gold award for service from the CWWA. He also received the gold award from the FAO/UN for outstanding contribution to Water and Agriculture in 2002.
